Tax Season? Bring On the RPA Bots!

How Robotic Process Automation (RPA) can solve tax problems.

As we get prepared for tax season, Sarah Hanson of BP3 Global Inc. takes us through creating an RPA bot for corporate taxes.

‍The start of a new year always gets me excited for tax season. Pulling together my W-2 and all of the documents, scanning them in, and working through an online tax application. It is the most wonderful time of the year…

Oh, wait.

Regardless of how you do your personal taxes, one RPA use case that I enjoyed working on was the review of some corporate tax tasks. If you have ever worked in a finance department you know that tax season lasts most of the year and a lot of it is mundane repetitive work. Bring on the bots!

The process that we created is a bot that reviews and validates payments for federal and state taxes. This bot references the tax returns generated by the payments system and then checks the payments against the various states’ review systems. The bot produces a monthly report of exceptions found between the company's internal payment system and the state and federal revenue systems.

Tax bots can save a lot of time, money, and sanity for organizations working across states, territories, and countries.
