In tackling the intricate management of Chronic Kidney Disease, a solution was developed using IBM’s Operational Decision Manager to automate kidney care protocols, enhancing consistency and adaptability in patient care. BP3's technology, including the Brazos BRAID accelerator and Decision Validation Framework, played a crucial role in facilitating a seamless transition to and validation of these automated treatment protocols.




Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a significant health concern in the United States, affecting around 15% of the adult population, or approximately 30 million individuals, according to 2017 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CKD encompasses a spectrum of conditions that impair kidney function over time. As the disease progresses, it may lead to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), necessitating life-sustaining treatments like dialysis. The U.S. Renal Data System Annual Data Report indicates that nearly 468,000 Americans are dependent on dialysis.

Managing CKD is complex and multifaceted, requiring regular dialysis sessions and comprehensive healthcare management. Patients often undergo meticulous titration of medications, necessitating frequent dosage adjustments and regular laboratory testing to monitor the disease's progression and the effectiveness of treatment. This care complexity underscores the need for precise, consistent, and efficient management protocols to ensure optimal patient outcomes and quality of life.

In this context, BP3 partnered with a leading kidney care provider to revolutionize their approach to managing CKD through technology-driven solutions. By harnessing IBM’s Operational Decision Manager (ODM), BP3 brought a transformative change to the way CKD care protocols were administered and managed.

The collaboration between BP3’s Decision Architects and Decision Developers and the clinical experts at the kidney care provider was pivotal in modeling and implementing approximately fifteen sophisticated care protocols. This initiative was empowered by BP3’s ODM - Decision Management accelerator, Brazos BRAID, which facilitated a seamless transition from manual to automated protocols. Brazos BRAID's integration into the healthcare provider's system marked a significant step towards leveraging technology to streamline complex medical processes.

Post-implementation, the automated protocols were subjected to rigorous evaluation by the provider’s Quality Assurance team. Utilizing BP3’s ODM testing suite, Brazos Decision Validation Framework (DVF), the team ensured that the protocols underwent comprehensive testing, thereby guaranteeing their efficacy and reliability.

The adoption of a Business Rule Management System (BRMS) like ODM in the healthcare sector, particularly in the management of chronic conditions like CKD, is a game-changer.
