Ted discusses one of the most powerful tools you can use to get full control of your system.

Speaker 1: Did you turn on the pack or did you put it on him, Matthew?

Matthew: No, I did not.

Speaker 3: Today, Ted, we're going to talk about the IBM BPM REST API. Let's start by explaining what the REST API is.

Ted: The REST API for IBM Business Process Manager, it's a collection of methods and commands that the product uses to perform much of its work. What it does is provide a layer of abstraction. In order to get the data that you want or to perform the commands that you want, you don't have to know about the underlying database structure or the back-end systems. All you need to do is make a simple request. The API will do a lot of the more technical work and you'll get the response that you're looking for.

Speaker 3: You talked about getting the data that you want and performing the commands that you want, how else can you use the REST API?

Ted: It's a really important tool for BPM developers because, once you start to understand how the system works, you can go and develop better user interfaces, better system interactions, and better dashboards for your users.

Speaker 3: What really makes it so powerful for developers, other than the better user interactions, better system interactions, and better dashboards?

Ted: I think the REST API is one of the most powerful tools you can use in order to get full control over your system. A lot of times BPM administrators will be, or any administrator, will be nervous about adopting a new piece of software because it's confusing. The back-end, there's a lot of things in the back-end that they may not understand. But using the REST API you can really gain this administrative control over your system where, when an issue does arise, you'll figure out a way to fix it. You'll figure out a way to solve that issue.

Speaker 1: Okay. One Take Ted.

Speaker 3: One Take Ted.

Ted: One Take Ted.
