Business Considerations for an RPA Bot

Ready to build your first RPA bot? Let's go over some business considerations.

Speaker 1: So you think you're ready to build your first RPA bot? That's great. This is the first in a two-part series about what to consider before starting. Part one will cover the business considerations, while part two will get into the technical considerations. Before you can build your first bot, you need to identify a good use case. This is critical, because your first bot will set the tone for all future RPA projects at your organization. With that in mind, you should be looking for a use case with the highest possible visibility and the lowest possible risk. In other words, we're looking for an easy win that we can point to in the future when we're looking to build bots 2 through 200. Great RPA use cases usually have the following characteristics: Repetition; we're looking for tasks that can be repeated in nearly the same way every time. High volume; ideally, those tasks need to be completed multiple times over the course of a week, or even a day. Multiple systems; while this isn't required, many RPA candidates involve moving data from system to system.

When a person is completing work like this, errors are common. We also recommend that you consider the availability of subject matter experts. An RPA bot is only as smart as the people who teach it how to work. Therefore, the availability and buy-in of the people who do the work today is key. It's important to make sure that these people understand that you are not trying to replace them. Instead, you're trying to free them from the repetitive work, and allow them to focus on higher value work.
