?The role of the data scientist has never been more important than it is today.? If this is what you are thinking, I agree! The title was a bit of a shameless ploy to catch eyes. I personally think the Data Scientist role is incredibly valuable and I love data science but I have some problems?
Now data science is a very broad term so the data scientist I am referring to is someone who queries data sources, crunches numbers and builds charts or reports, similar to a business analyst but typically using newer big data software. This is the role that I want to grow into something even more useful.
With innovations in machine learning and cognitive computing the real value of the Data Scientist is in building tools that empower the individuals with domain expertise. Data scientists should write software and build tools that allow users to get as far as possible without needing a specialized role. People shouldn't need to ask a Data Scientist to build a specific chart or to try to uncover the cause of something. The tools built by Data Scientists should empower automated discovery of trends and interesting data and even suggested possible resolutions of business problems that allow users to optimize their own work. With products that integrate intelligent modeling and machine learning seamlessly to assist the user with their work in a way that is unobtrusive will the role of the data scientist really meet its full potential.
