BP3's Recommended Tuesday Sessions for #IBMInterConnect 2017

Post by
Scott Francis

Here's the Tuesday edition, hot off the presses!

Start with the Chairman's Address. Ginny Rommetty is a great speaker and this is a fantastic opportunity to get her view on the path forward for IBM, customers, and partners. She'll be joined by Marc Benioff of Salesforce as well as Bruce Ross of the Royal Bank of Canada, and others.

Chairman's Address
Tuesday, 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM | Events Center | Session ID: 7309A
"Cognitive and cloud are not separate phenomena. They are two sides of the same coin," says IBM Chairman, President and CEO, Ginni Rometty, who will be the featured keynote speaker in this standout session. Bringing cognitive capabilities together with cloud allows us to innovate with purpose, have trust in insights, and invest with confidence -- changing the way we work and solve the world's biggest problems. Don't miss this signature event and hear from industry leaders and esteemed guests who will share how you can become a key player in the new cognitive era.

In the 11:30 slot, this session stood out as an opportunity to see how SPSS might interact with ODM in a practical solution context:

Predictive Decision-Making with IBM SPSS and IBM ODM at the State of New York Tax Services
Tuesday, 11:30 AM - 12:15 PM | Mandalay Bay Ballroom I | Session ID: 3251A
The New York State Tax Services processes thousands of tax matters weekly. Historically, the department has been reactive in detecting non-compliance, which is expensive and time-consuming. This talk shares a solution that enables early detection and proactive action. This approach uses IBM SPSS to process the submitted data in the context of historic patterns and recommends candidate corrective actions. Next, IBM ODM applies legal and policy restrictions on the candidates to create an action plan.

In the 1:30pm slot, my pick would be Wells Fargo's session on process maturity - Russ Pfeil and Connie Masterson have shepherded a great program over the last few years in Wells Fargo, and we've been grateful to be a part of the success and to see that success continue unabated. If you want insight into how BPM can achieve great results in a truly complex organization and IT landscape, Wells Fargo is exhibit A for how to do it.? Just yesterday we heard from Lilly that sitting in a Wells Fargo session a few years ago helped them find the keys to success in their program.

Process Maturity in Real Life: How Wells Fargo Hit Its Stride with BPM
Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 | 1:30 PM - 2:15 PM | Mandalay Bay Ballroom K | Session ID: 5960A
True process maturity pays dividends to your business. Wells Fargo wholesale customer enrollments has been on the process journey for a few years. In this session, you will learn about Wells Fargo's process transformation looking back and forward, lessons learned, insights gained, and where we see our process journey going in the next three years. Over the past three years, we have implemented over 14 process applications, maximizing our use of shared services and patterns to allow us to successfully migrate 400+ users to our new enrollments platform. At Wells Fargo, process transformation is a journey versus a destination, and adopting an agile mindset along with the IBM tooling has created great value for our business.

Also available in that time period is the update to IBM BPM.? IBM has moved to incremental quarterly releases rather than major releases each year.? That change has happened quietly so this session may be more useful than in some years because you may already have some of the capabilities discussed in your environment without realizing it!

What's New in IBM Business Process Manager
Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 | 1:30 PM - 2:15 PM | Reef F | Session ID: 1470A
Last year we moved to a continuous delivery approach for IBM Business Process Manager (BPM), providing quarterly updates including both cumulative fixes and new product features. In this session, you will learn about the new capabilities that we introduced in IBM BPM over the last 12 months, including the latest 2017 Q1 release.

In the 2:30 slot, our recommendation is Willis Towers Watson.? This is a practical session on getting the most out of Blueworks Live, the kind of session you can really put to work in your organization.

How Willis Towers Watson Started Off with IBM Blueworks Live: Successes and Lessons Learned
Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 | 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM | Mandalay Bay Ballroom L | Session ID: 1389A
Willis Towers Watson is a leading global advisory, brokering and solutions company based in the UK. This session will share our experiences with IBM Blueworks Live since March 2015, including: How we chose it, what security we set, how we organized and provisioned our licenses, how we organized our Spaces, the modeling standards we set, how we plan to control quality, how we track and report progress, what we've changed and why, what our Glossary looked like initially versus now, and how helpful IBM has been throughout this journey. We'll also share our future plans.

Another interesting session coming up at 2:30 is Daimler's session on cognitive business processes.? This should be good insight into how two key IBM technologies come together to create value for Daimler.

How Cognitive Business Processes Support Daimler's Change Management Solution
Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 | 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM | Mandalay Bay Ballroom J | Session ID: 2372A
Human- and case-centricity are the typical attributes of change management business processes. This can, however, lead to very complex business scenarios. It drives business to embrace the new era of business process innovations?the cognitive business process! The question is: how to realize this with IBM BPM? In this session, we will show you how IBM's cognitive service offerings help Daimler make better decisions and drive business process navigation more intelligently. We will introduce how the solution learns from data produced by knowledge workers and then assists the business with its educated services.

For those more interested in ODM, there's a good session with IBM and State Farm on large-scale ODM deployments:

Large-Scale ODM Deployment Challenges at State Farm Insurance, Including Traceability of RuleApps
Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 | 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM | Mandalay Bay Ballroom I | Session ID: 3411A
This session explores some of the challenges with deploying IBM Operational Decision Manager (ODM) applications at very large scale, as well as ways and techniques to overcome those challenges. The discussion focuses on how to make deployments automated and repeatable, as well as on techniques and sample code to implement full, end-to-end traceability of rule applications for auditing purposes. It will also address the complex topic of ODM RuleApp and XOM versioning, and present lessons learned.

In the 3:45 time slot, Stubhub has always been one of my favorite clients because I love their service as a customer, and because I have fond memories of my time working with Stubhub myself.? In this session, they'll talk about their superior customer service approach.? In 2009-10, they were the only customer we worked with who was focused on customer service rather than cutting operational costs during a time of real economic uncertainty and pain.? That culture and vision holds true today.

Stubhub Makes It Right for Customers with IBM Business Process Manager
Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 | 3:45 PM - 4:30 PM | Mandalay Bay Ballroom J | Session ID: 2460A
Stubhub's competitive advantage is to have superior customer service combined with the assurance that any ticket purchased or sold through Stubhub will be authentic. Stubhub has been augmenting its case management system with IBM Business Process Manager. This has given Stubhub the capability to provide their Customer Service Specialists with the type of software capabilities needed to effectively support Stubhub customers.

In the 4:45 time slot, we have a return to the scene of the Beer.? Carlsberg is a great success story for BPM in Denmark. There are even white papers published about the return on investment! Meanwhile, I for one welcome our robot overlords, if they come with beer.

"BeerPM": Carlsberg's Journey to Process Excellence
Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 | 4:45 PM - 5:30 PM | Mandalay Bay Ballroom J | Session ID: 5987A
Carlsberg Group describes itself as "Vikings who make beer with robots." Using IBM Business Process Manager (BPM), Carlsberg has made the product ordering process more efficient. Join Carlsberg in this session to learn about the efficiencies the company has gained using BPM as their order management tool. You'll also hear about their small team's ability to manage new seasonal products with no errors. We will share what we have learned, and discuss where we see BPM and Carlsberg going in the future.

Another option for that time slot is cognitive and design thinking:

Starting Your Cognitive and BPM Journey Using the Innovation and Design Thinking Methodology
Tuesday, Mar 21, 2017 | 4:45 PM - 5:30 PM | Reef F | Session ID: 1612A
What is the implementation journey to transform a business idea into a successful Cognitive Business Operations (CBO) project? How do you identify appropriate projects for cognitive capabilities? This session will answer these questions and more. IBM experts will teach you the methodology, strategy, and roadmap for successfully creating a CBO project. We will cover using IBM BPM, Operational Decision Manager (ODM), and Watson Bluemix services together, from project identification to production deployment.

Well... that should get you through the day.? If you've made it this far, and you're an IBM BPM or ODM customer or just getting started with them, you might want to join our social event tonight for process and decision management practitioners and clients. Come to booth #560 and see Krista White about attending - you won't find a better gathering of North American Asian, and European experts under one roof.? There may be a wait list but we'd love to have you join us if we can!
