This year the ABJ is honoring 70 companies in four categories. Last year, 65 companies walked away with awards, and we archived last year's winners and conveyed some of their perks in a series of slideshows. Those Web pages have become one of the most valuable tools for Austin job seekers ? especially newcomers to the area ? and businesses use the status to boost recruiting, business relationships and office morale.
With the area's unemployment rate now below 4 percent, employee retention should be at the top of every business manager's list of concerns. It is for these CEOs who recently offered their advice in the same vein as Sir Richard Branson, who is quoted as saying: "Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to."
The way I'd look at it is, hire great people - and hire people with the potential to be great for your company - and then invest in them! It's amazing what they can accomplish when you set the table and let them lead and execute.
