Austin Coffee Startup: Houndstooth

As noted previously in this space, I’m a fan of Austin startups – even when they’re not tech startups.  Houndstooth has been serving up some of the best cups of Coffee in Austin since they opened the first location six years ago, and now they’re opening another location in Dallas:

The location will include a 750-square-foot cafe that serves coffee and tea, set to open in June. There will also be a 450-square-foot kitchen serving breakfast, lunch and other menu items, set to open later this summer, and Jettison, a 650-square-foot cocktail bar focusing on mescals and sherries, set to open in late fall or early winter.

The new location will boost Houndstooth’s total store count to four, with two in Austin at 4200 N. Lamar Blvd. and 401 Congress Ave.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “it’s a coffee shop, not a startup,” keep in mind that the founder sold his home for the down payment on a loan that got the first location started.  That’s “all in” in my book, and startup in my book.

I’m a big fan of hitting Taco Deli and Houndstooth on the same trip to the North Lamar location – and if I were running site selection for Houndstooth, I’d open one next to every Taco Deli I can find- it’s a great one-two punch.
