Austin as Business Hub

Austin as a business hub opportunity keeps getting better. With population projected to double (again) in the next 20 years, Austin is catching up to it’s very large neighbors in Texas, and our air travel is going to get more and more important as a reflection of our economic opportunities.

Austin civic leaders track our travel metrics mostly by # of daily seats-  19,726 at last count.  But I track by # of direct destinations from Austin: 48 at last count, including some places you might not expect:

  • London
  • Toronto
  • Seattle
  • Portland (seasonal)
  • Los Cabos (seasonal)
  • Cancun
  • Ft. Lauderdale
  • Miami

That number of direct flights was 39 just a few years ago.  With a new customs area in Austin, and an airport that can expand, I think we’ll see air traffic growth for a long time to come – and that is really going to help our local businesses. Videoconferencing is great, but being there in person still carries more weight.
