No sooner has Austin Bergstrom airport finished it’s first major expansion for International flights ($350M expansion, at that), than the airport and city turn their attention to the next major expansion.

ABIA Executive Director Jim Smith said the new nine-gate expansion lifts the airport’s capacity to 15 million passengers, up from the 11 million passengers the Southeast Austin facility was initially designed to accommodate. But ABIA’s annual passenger count has already surpassed that benchmark, reaching 15.8 million passengers last year. Smith expects this year’s total to reach around 17.5 million.

“Even though we just did a major project, we’re already kind of behind the eight ball in terms of keeping up with the rate of growth,” Smith said.

The big thing we can all do as businesses in Austin is to take the direct flights they keep signing up out of Austin’s airport, and to support the master planning for expansion.   We are lucky to have such a great airport in Austin, and we’re even luckier that some of our great restaurants are represented in the airport.
