Austin's B2C Startups are Humming… They Just Aren't Software Companies

A friend on twitter made the comment:

He was referencing Beatbox Beverages.  But they’re hardly the only ones.  Whole Foods might have been our original B2C success story.  There are a bevy of successful restaurant businesses that have expanded beyond Austin: Chuys, Torchy’s, Houndstooth, P. Terry’s, Amy’s Ice Cream, etc.  But just riffing on beverages and non-restaurants:

  • Tito’s Vodka
  • Deep Eddy Vodka (just sold to Heaven Hill Brands ) – you might know them for their Ruby Red.
  • Sweat Leaf Teas
  • Shiner (aka Spoetzl Brewery)
  • Tiff’s Treats (just raised $14M)
  • Cuvee Coffee
  • High Brew Coffee
  • And many others

So maybe Austin’s particular expertise in consumer business is a little bit more about bottles than smartphones… it may not be as profitable or shoot up the IPO charts, but it might be more fun, and it definitely tastes better.
