Why you should Care about Business Process Management
Joshua King published a great post on LinkedIn: “Why every business leader should care about Business Process Management” – in which Joshua lays out just how important BPM can be for modern business leaders.
“The Practice of Business Process Management, (or simply Process Management) is based on the principle that the act of knowing your business processes has value in and of itself.” – Joshua King
This is a truth every BPM practitioner knows, implicitly. Josh goes on:
“When I say knowing your business processes, I mean more than just knowing how someone in the warehouse packs a box, that’s an activity in a process. I’m talking about the process that starts when a customer hits the checkout button on your website and continues until the customer receives the product they ordered.”
In fact the process may continue through the stages necessary to handle returns or complaints. And because they cross your organization following customer requests, there’s real value there.
Understanding our own businesses is often undervalued by business leaders and IT leaders alike – too often we worry about navel gazing instead of “getting things done”. But understanding context and process allows us to make better decisions, and to design better process – and process software – solutions.
When business leaders really embrace BPM, however, it is important to keep in mind this advice: it isn’t a one-and-done implementation, it is a culture change, an ongoing investment.
For business leaders who see the benefit of understanding and improving their processes, BPM-based solutions are a powerful recipe for success.
