A Year in BPM Blogging, 2014
Again our Blog had a good year. Page Views per month were sitting at around 9,000 at the end of 2013… But by the end of 2014, page views were in the 13,000 to 14,000 range. Interest in Brazos and other BPM topics is driving a lot of traffic to our blog and our site.

So what were the most popular posts of 2014?
- New Gartner BPM Quadrant is Out – there was a lot of debate over the previous quadrant, but this one stirred less controversy, overall. Lots of incoming links to this post. When you get past the initial analysis of Gartner’s quadrant, you also can see some commentary on our vision for how to make the BPM experience a great customer experience for our customers… And our vision and execution has only improved since then.
- Apple and Market Segmentation – was the next most read post, a testament to how much Apple was in the news in 2014. It was the #3 most read post in 2013 despite publishing late in the year, and rose to #2 this year.
- Apple and Business Process Management – this gem from 2009 still shows highly on our pageview counts with a pretty consistent daily view count. This was the #1 post in 2013, but falls to #3 this year. In this post I made my best argument for the implied business process of Apple’s product releases (using the iPhone and iPod as primary examples).
- Reactions to the new Gartner iBPMS Magic Quadrant, part 1 – the previous Gartner report generated so much controversy that the first post of my review still generates enough pageviews to get on this list!
- Phil Gilbert on IBM’s Design Thinking – This post discussing Phil Gilbert’s design-thinking mission at IBM was widely read both in- and out-side of IBM.
- Brazos for Activiti – A lot of interest from the Activiti BPM community in our demonstration of Brazos running on Activiti. We intended to follow-up with a beta release of our work in 2014 – but customers come first and we had to push the beta to early 2015. Expecting to have news on this front in Q1 2015!
- There’s still interest in figuring out how big the BPM Market is …
- And a post that nicely shows how Brazos UI trumps the out of the box IBM BPM user interface experience.
- Next up: Andrew Paier’s post on When to use Coach Views and when to use Custom UIs , where he explains why there’s a good case for coach-based UIs, and yet there are times when custom UIs just make the most sense.
- Next up was the announcement of BP3’s acquisition of the interests of Modexe, Ltd in the UK. Obviously this generated a lot of interest in BPM circles, but given the late date of publication, it didn’t rise to the top for the yearly stats! Establishing an office in London is a big step in the evolution of BP3, and of BPM consulting in general.
- And my personal favorite: Sandy Kemsley on Brazos: “One Ring to Rule them All”

We posted a lot about Brazos UI, Brazos Charts, and Brazos Portal. These three products really change the face of user interface for BPM, and we’re not done yet. We’re seeing a bifurcation of projects – successful projects are largely using Brazos UI. Those that aren’t using Brazos UI are often unsuccessful. When you have technology that means the difference between success and failure, you want to tell everyone about it. It is now the de facto standard for UI for IBM BPM – at this point over 900 registered developers and well over 60 documented live deployments. Expect more of the same in 2015!
We also wrote a lot about customer experience. These posts don’t tick off buzzwords that drive pageviews outside the BPM community the way that Apple posts do, and they don’t generate controversy. Our competitors often tell us that they don’t buy it- they don’t believe that we’re different. But what we tell our new customers is – give us a BPM project- and you can experience the BP3 Difference. Our current customers already tell us they love the experience working with us. On more than one occasion, a customer has told me that they aren’t paying us enough. I want all of them to feel that strongly about the value we’re bringing to the table.
Apple. Yep, it is still an interesting lens for business, mobile, design, and business process management. When it made sense, I was still writing about Apple in 2014. Odds are, the occasion will arise in 2015 as well.
Posts about how we think about running our business don’t often show up in the “top x” lists, but we’ll keep writing them. Part of a great customer experience is sharing more than just the X’s and O’s, but the Y’s – as in why we do the things we do, why we care, and why we’re so passionate about BPM. I think our customers and partners want to understand how we think, and the blog is a great way to share that.
BPM died again in 2014, or hadn’t you heard?… These posts, collectively, would have been in the top 5 by traffic.
