My mom is a big Sudoku enthusiast too and the daily dose of Sudoku from the Newspaper is not enough for her - so i sat down one day and spent a few hrs on MS Excel to see if I could write some formulae/macros to create and solve them - and I admit I didn't go far. Thought it was easier to get a book from the store! (with answers):P

But very interesting thoughts. There was a time I was very hooked to a Sudoku app that came with my phone. Once you crack a game, you are sure to just fill the boxes more from memory than skill - but heres the deal - there were 100 games across three levels, so if you are a real enthusiast, you keep progressing towards the tougher games - never really inclined to come back to the same game again.
